MORONGO BASIN — Morongo Unified School District students from Yucca Valley High School and Twentynine Palms High School went on the road this month to attended the NCRF College Expo in Riverside and the NACAC College Fair in Ontario, securing college offers and scholarships while gaining valuable insights into higher education options.

A college fair or expo is an event where representatives from colleges and universities gather to provide students with information about admissions, academic programs, financial aid, scholarships and campus life. These events allow students to explore different institutions, ask questions and make connections that can help guide their college decision-making process. Many fairs also offer on-the-spot admissions and scholarship opportunities.

At the NCRF College Expo, which featured about 85 colleges from Southern California and across the United States, 14 MUSD students received college offers and scholarships. One standout student received seven official college offers, demonstrating exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential. Another student secured a scholarship offer totaling at least $32,000, easing the financial burden of college expenses.

"This was the first time we brought a delegation of students to these events and they exceeded my wildest expectations,” said assistant superintendent of secondary education Amy Woods. “I am so excited that so many of our students benefited in such a concrete and meaningful way."

About 150 Morongo Unified School District students also attended the NACAC College Fair on Feb. 5 at the Ontario Convention Center. The fair featured numerous institutions, including several University of California and California State schools, as well as a variety of out-of-state options. A significant highlight was information about discounted tuition opportunities through the Western Undergraduate Exchange program, which includes enticing options from schools in Idaho, New Mexico and Washington.

Students received 50 offers from various colleges, all with scholarship opportunities. Among the offers, six distinguished invitations came from the University of California, Berkeley, renowned for its rigorous academic programs and vibrant campus life. In addition to Berkeley, three offers each came from Ohio State University, the University of New Mexico and the University of Hawaii. Two additional offers came from UCLA.

“This was not only a successful endeavor but also an inspiring example of what can be achieved when students take proactive steps toward their futures,” said YVHS dual enrollment coordinator Dr. Trent Nicholson. “With numerous college offers and scholarship opportunities secured, these students are well on their way to making their dreams a reality. The community looks forward to following their journeys as they embark on this exciting new chapter in their lives.”

MUSD continues to expand college opportunities for students. The district collaborates with Copper Mountain College through the RISE program, which provides early exposure to the college environment. Additionally, MUSD supports students through the early college initiative and an expansive dual enrollment program, allowing them to earn college credits while still in high school. These efforts ensure that students have multiple pathways to higher education, equipping them with the tools needed for academic and career success.
