Board Vacancy

The Morongo Unified School District Board of Education is accepting applications for four-year appointments as trustees for Area 2 and Area 3 of the District. Due to a lack of candidates for these positions in the November 2024 election, the Board is reaching out to the community to fill these critical roles. For a map of trustee areas, please visit: https://elections.sbcounty.gov/voterregistration/districtlookuptools/

Per the Education Code and Board Bylaw: Any person is eligible to be a Governing Board member, without further qualifications, if they are 18 years of age or older, a citizen of the state, a resident of the school district, a registered voter, and not legally disqualified from holding civil office. Any person who has been convicted of a felony involving bribery, embezzlement, theft of public funds, extortion, perjury, or conspiracy to commit any such crime, under California law or the law of another state, the United States, or another country, is not eligible to be a candidate for office or elected as a Board member unless they have been granted a pardon in accordance with the law. (Education Code 35107; Elections Code 20)

A district employee elected to the Board must resign from their position before being sworn in, or their employment will be automatically terminated upon being sworn into office. (Education Code 35107)

Applications are available online at https://www.morongousd.com/o/musd/page/board-of-education and are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on October 24, 2024. Types of Meetings

Regular Meetings: Regular meetings are convened for the discharge of the Board's legal responsibilities and include, but are not limited to, discussions of policy, school district business, planning, educational programs, and matters of community interest. Regular meetings are typically held on the second Tuesday of the month, with open session beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Special Meetings: Special meetings may be called when a vote on a specific issue is needed before a regular meeting is scheduled. Special meetings may be called by the Board President or by a majority of the Board. No business will be transacted except that for which the special meeting was convened, and public comments may only address items on the agenda. Special meeting agendas are posted 24 hours in advance as required by law.

Study Sessions: These sessions may be scheduled from time to time to provide Board Members with opportunities for planning and discussion without formal action. Topics for discussion will be announced publicly and sessions will be conducted in accordance with state law.

Public Hearings: Public hearings may be conducted from time to time to ensure adequate time for the public to express its views regarding a specific issue.

Public Participation

Welcome to the Board of Education of the Morongo Unified School District. Your participation increases the public's awareness, promotes understanding and maintains accountability. The Board warmly welcomes your input. Board meetings are conducted for the purpose of carrying on the District's business. All meetings of the Board are open to the public, with the exception of Closed Session meetings. (Government Code 54954.2)

Addressing the Board Regarding Agendized and Non-Agendized Items

You may address the Board regarding any item on the agenda when that item is being considered. If you request to speak about a matter of school district business not on the agenda, you will be invited to make your remarks during the "Public Comment" portion of the agenda.  If you wish to address the Board, please complete a yellow speaker card located at the entrance to the meeting room and provide to the recording secretary prior to the discussion of the topic. Individual speakers are limited to 3 minutes and may only speak once on a topic. Public comment will be limited to a total of 20 minutes.

When You Are Recognized to Speak

Please step to the microphone and direct your remarks to the President. Because of the Brown Act, neither the Board nor Administration may respond to items not on the agenda, but may ask clarifying questions only. State law provides for public comment during the course of our meeting; however, we hope that comments and criticism are directed towards issues, not individuals. We ask that all speakers be respectful of our public employees.
